O Joint Meeting APEF-AEEH On Alcohol-Related irá realizar-se nos dias 27 e 28 de janeiro, no Porto. Helena Cortez Pinto é um dos nomes responsáveis pela organização deste encontro científico, onde as doenças hepáticas alcoólicas vão ser o tema em destaque, permitindo uma discussão entre profissionais especializados e que irá contribuir para “prevenir e tratar melhor e mais precocemente os doentes afetados”.

Faz parte da direção da organização do Joint Meeting APEF-AEEH On Alcohol-Related Liver Disease que irá decorrer entre 27 e 28 de janeiro de 2023. Qual o objetivo desta iniciativa?

Helena Cortez Pinto (HCP) – O objetivo principal é a disseminação entre os médicos portugueses e espanhóis do conhecimento sobre doença hepática relacionada com o álcool, com a presença de especialistas de topo.

Quais têm sido os maiores desafios enquanto diretora da organização?

HCP – Selecionar quais os tópicos de maior interesse e quais os melhores especialistas na área para os apresentarem.

Que hot topics estarão em destaque no encontro?

HCP – A evolução da frequência da doença e o padrão atualmente em mudança, da frequência da doença, de acordo com o sexo e a idade; fatores associados a progressão ou regressão; a importância da microbiota; formas de prevenção e de tratamento.

Além de estar envolvida na organização, será chairman, apresentadora e palestrante. O que pode revelar relativamente à sua intervenção sobre o tema Current burden and changing epidemiology in ArLD?

HCP – Verifica-se um aumento significativo do consumo de álcool no mundo e também da prevalência de doença hepática associada ao consumo excessivo de álcool. Existe uma alteração do padrão com maior número de jovens e de mulheres com ArLD. Reconhece-se também a importância crescente que a simultaneidade dos fatores de risco metabólicos no risco de progressão da doença.

A doença hepática alcoólica é uma patologia com expressividade em Portugal, considerado um problema de saúde pública. Como julga que se pode alterar este panorama?

HCP – Sim, é de facto um problema grave que pode ser melhorado com medidas políticas que reduzam o consumo excessivo de álcool.

Acredita que a evolução das doenças hepáticas alcoólicas possa ser amenizada num futuro próximo?

HCP – Sim, se as medidas políticas certas forem tomadas, cujo efeito poderá levar algum tempo a ser observado.

Crê que o acompanhamento dado aos doentes com este tipo de patologias seja suficiente?

HCP – O acompanhamento habitualmente dá-se numa fase tardia, o que é muito prejudicial, uma vez que o diagnóstico deve ser precoce, ou seja antes de surgirem as complicações.

Quais são as suas expectativas relativamente ao evento?

HCP – Que resulte num maior conhecimento da ArLD, que permita prevenir e tratar melhor e mais precocemente os doentes afetados.

Liver diseases associated with excessive alcohol consumption: APEF-AEEH On Alcohol-Related Joint Meeting

The Joint Meeting APEF-AEEH on Alcohol-Related liver diseases, will take place on the 27th and 28th of January, in Oporto. Helena Cortez Pinto is one of the names responsible for the organization of this scientific meeting, where alcohol related liver diseases will be the highlighted theme, allowing a discussion among specialized professionals and that will contribute to “prevent and treat better as well as earlier the affected patients”.

You are part of the board of the organization of the Joint Meeting APEF-AEEH On Alcohol-Related Liver Disease that will take place between 27 and 28 January 2023. What is the goal of this initiative?

Helena Cortez Pinto (HCP) – The main goal is the dissemination of knowledge on alcohol-related liver disease among Portuguese and Spanish physicians, with the presence of top specialists.

What have been the biggest challenges as the organization’s director?

HCP – Selecting which topics are of greatest interest and which are the best specialists in the field to present them.

What hot topics will be highlighted at the meeting?

HCP – The evolution of disease frequency and the currently changing pattern of disease frequency according to gender and age; factors associated with progression or regression; the importance of the microbiota; forms of prevention and treatment.

Besides being involved in the organisation, you will be moderator and speaker. What can you reveal regarding your intervention on the topic “Current burden and changing epidemiology in ArLD?”

HCP – There is a significant increase in alcohol consumption worldwide resulting in the growing prevalence of liver disease associated with excessive alcohol consumption. There is a changing pattern with more young people and women with alcohol related liver disease. The increasing importance of simultaneous metabolic risk factors in the risk of disease progression is also recognised.

Alcohol related liver disease is a significant pathology in Portugal, considered a public health problem. How do you think this panorama can be changed?

HCP – Yes, it is indeed a serious problem, that may be curtailed with political measures that reduce the excessive consumption of alcohol.

Do you believe that the evolution of alcohol related liver disease can be reduced in the near future?

HCP – Yes, if the right policy measures are taken, the effect of which may take some time to be seen.

Do you think that the follow-up given to patients with this type of pathologies is sufficient?

HCP – Although many people receive the right follow-up, there is an urgent need of an earlier diagnosis before complications arise.

What are your expectations for the event?

HCP – That it will result in a greater knowledge of ArLD, allowing better treatment of affected patients, as well as earlier prevention.
